It depends on your situation. Gas continuous flow offers unlimited hot water and lower running costs than standard electric, making it great for larger families. However, if natural gas isn't available at your address (check with Vector), LPG is an option but running costs are higher. A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to limit the temperature delivered to your taps and showers. Under the NZ Building Code (G12/AS1), hot water at fixtures must not exceed 55 degrees Celsius to prevent scalding. Your cylinder stores water at 60 degrees C (minimum, to prevent Legionella bacteria), so the tempering valve reduces this to a safe delivery temperature. A tempering valve is mandatory on all new and replacement hot water installations in New Zealand.
