Under the Gas Act 1992, any gas work in New Zealand — including connecting a cooktop, replacing a gas hot water system, or running a new gas line — requires a Gas Safety Certificate issued by a Certifying Gasfitter. This must be lodged with Energy Safety within 20 working days. We handle all certification as part of our service.

If you already have a gas bayonet fitting near your cooktop, connection typically costs $200-$400 including the Gas Safety Certificate. If a new gas line needs to be run from the meter, expect $500-$1,500 depending on the distance and complexity. We provide fixed-price quotes before starting any work.

Natural gas (reticulated via Vector's network) is available across much of Auckland, particularly in established suburbs. Coverage is strong in Central Auckland, East Auckland, and the North Shore, but some newer developments and rural areas may not have access. You can check Vector's website for gas availability at your address. If natural gas isn't available, LPG (bottled or bulk) is an excellent alternative — we install and connect both.

No. It is illegal in New Zealand for anyone other than a registered gasfitter to do gas work. Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006, doing gas work without registration can result in fines up to $50,000 for individuals. More importantly, improperly installed gas systems can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, and explosions. Always use a registered professional.

If you smell gas: 1) Don't switch any electrical appliances on or off, 2) Open doors and windows, 3) Turn off the gas at the meter or cylinder if safe to do so, 4) Evacuate the building, 5) Call the Gas Emergency line on 0800 764 764 from outside, or call us on 021 128 3813. Natural gas has a distinctive "rotten egg" smell added (mercaptan) specifically so you can detect leaks.
